Early Medical College of Georgia Women Graduates

This collection is comprised of audiotape transcriptions of interviews featuring some of the early women graduates of MCG. The interviews were conducted in October 1984 by Lynda Lee Carlisle and Claire Hicks as an independent study project during their fourth year as medical students at MCG. Their project was overseen and advised by Dr. Russell Moores, who was Associate Dean for Special Programs (Medicine) at the time. Both Carlisle and Hicks graduated from MCG with medical degrees in 1985.

Drs. Carlisle and Hicks conducted six interviews featuring seven of the early female MCG graduates. (One interview includes two of the physicians.) Six of the seven female physicians practiced medicine in Georgia. One focused on pediatrics, while two were a general practitioners who also served as public health doctors in their home counties. Three of these physicians were anesthetists while one retired from the Central State Hospital of Georgia.

Dr. Loree Florence, the first female to graduate from and receive a medical degree from MCG in 1926, passed away in 1983, and therefore was not interviewed by Carlisle and Hicks.
