Abstract
Description
A cannula for a left heart bypass. It is made of metal and silver in color. It is approximately 18 inches in length. At the end, it curves to one side and a needle comes out of the end. The top part consists of two parts that attach to one another near the top. At the very top of one of these parts is a knob that can be pulled so that the needle can be moved inwards to suck the blood. This knob is on top of a black rubber cap. It is assumed that the piece attached to the previous one is a reservoir that the blood runs into once it is sucked. These two parts fuse into one piece at the middle into a long tube that ends with the needle running out at the end. Engraved into the cannula is "Stille X Sweden". The "X" looks like a logo with a dot on each side of it. According to the exhibit card, the cannula for left heart bypass is circa 1960-1965. It was used for left heart bypass surgeries. It was inserted in the vein in the neck and the left atrium of the heart. Blood was sucked from the left atrium to the femoral artery. Dimensions are: Item A: 17.5" L; weight: 2.9 oz.; Item B: 18" L; weight: 3.4 oz.
